After Steven Soderbergh dropped out of directing The Man From U.N.C.L.E., it was announced that he planned to shoot another film in that time slot, before moving on to his Liberace biopic that will shoot next summer.
Now it has been announced by THR that Soderbergh has indeed chosen a new project. He will direct The Bitter Pill from Contagion and The Informant! writer Scott Z. Burns.
Here’s what Burns had to say, when contemplating directing the project a while back under the name The Side Effects:
“Deals with people and their moods. How we as a society can’t tolerate sadness and what that makes us vulnerable to. It’s a story where it’s like if someone were listening to the conversation you and I were having and thought ‘Hmmm, if that’s the way that society is working how can I manipulate that, how can I use that?’ And that’s what the movie’s about.”
The film is currently being pitched to studios and no casting has been announced yet, but Soderbergh always draws fantastic actors. I’m sure this project will be no exception.
The Bitter Pill is expected to begin filming in March which was when The Man From U.N.C.L.E. would have shot, more announcements on the project seem imminent.
