Black Clover continues to win fans worldwide for its rich, pacey plot and unexpected team-ups.
The series follows Asta, a boy born without any magic powers in a universe dominated by them. As a baby, he’s abandoned by his parents and left in the care of a local church, where he befriends fellow orphan Yuno. After the pair receive their personal Grimoires (books of magic spells) at age 15, these two underdog orphan boys attempt to claw their way up the strict social hierarchy of the Clover Kingdom’s Magic Knights and become the Wizard King. Every step of the way, they are scrutinized and blocked by the Kingdom’s nobility who resent a pair of orphans muscling in on their grip on power.
Enter Liebe – a devil incarnate. He hails from the underworld, but is currently residing in Asta’s personal Grimoire. Lieibe is a devil who hates devils, and like Asta, Liebe possesses no magical powers and was cruelly mocked by his peers.
When remembering his painful early years, Liebe blurted out his life goal: “I’ll never forgive them. This malice will never disappear. Devils are scum. Every last one of them. And so I’m gonna kill them all!!!”
This burning hatred led him to develop anti-magic, the antithesis of magic. Now contracted to Asta, he infuses the orphan boy with this power, and both can grow stronger as a result. The drawback is that the unification comes in short five-minute bursts, and leaves Asta racked with excruciating full-body pain, but this is a price he is willing to pay for the power of anti-magic.
While Liebe cannot use mana and possesses no magical powers of his own; his unique ability is free transference between the underworld and the world of the living. Alone, Liebe is weak but united with Asta, the pair become much greater than the sum of their parts.
