Lionsgate has announced the Blu-Ray release of Stand Up Guys for May. The film stars Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin.
Director Fisher Stevens has made a rather different movie with this one. It’s not a crime-action film by any means and it’s not really that deep of a drama either. It’s mostly just an in-the-life-of story about three old friends reuniting after a long period of time.
There’s no real structure to the story or even a concluding purpose. It instead acts as two hours of escape cinema, allowing you to simply soak in these three characters and experience their day-to-day lives. Had the film starred anyone else I’d probably be shitting on it heavily right now, but there’s something about seeing Pacino, Walken and Arin working together that put a big smile on my face.
The direction isn’t as focused as it should be, but the acting more than makes up for it.
Stand Up Guys made almost no money during its barely advertised release, yet I feel like many people will turn to this one first when it comes to Netflix or Redbox selections.
Our very own Jonathan Lack had this to say about the film in his review:
I will continue to hold out hope for a good Pacino/Walken team-up in the future, but with writing this rote and unremarkable, Stand Up Guys is just as flaccid as its main character’s penis.
The film will be coming to Blu-Ray with the following bonus material:
- American Muscle: The Stand Up Stunt Driving Scenes featurette
- The Lowdown On Making Stand Up Guys featurette
- The Stand Up Songs Of Jon Bon Jovi” featurette
- Deleted Scenes
- Audio Commentary with Director Fisher Stevens
Stand Up Guys hits store shelves and online retailers on May 21st, 2013.
