Warner Bros. have announced the Blu-Ray release of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey for March. The film stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis.
Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey finally saw a release last December, where it made an impressive amount of cash around the world. The film was in production for what seemed to be ages, with Guillermo del Toro at one point slotted in as the director. Eventually, Jackson came back to the series that he helped make popular and brought back that familiar style and tone.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is film one of three that’s based on the children’s novel written by J.R.R. Tolkien. It’s also the first full-length feature to be shot and presented at 48FPS, which is double the frame-rate of a normal film. This stirred up quite a lot of fuss when the film was making its rounds, having some people claiming it to be a complete mess, while others liked the more-flowing nature of the film.
I didn’t mind the higher frame rate for certain spots of the film, but I felt that it was slightly distracting to other, slower parts of dialogue. It made everything feel a bit too unreal and polished and overall, I feel that The Hobbit wasn’t the best place to release this new format.
Our very own Jonathan Lack had this to say about the film in his review:
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is very satisfying in many ways, but it is also mildly disappointing, a messy and occasionally frustrating film that does not always live up to its full potential.
The film will be coming to 3D and 2D Blu-Ray with DVD and Digital Copies to boot. A 1080p video transfer is confirmed and one can either assume a 5.1 or 7.1 lossless audio mix. Unfortunately at this time no special features are confirmed, but I’m sure there will be a decent amount announced closer to the film’s release.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is expected to street on March 19th, 2013.
