Alex Murdaugh has been found guilty on all charges in relation to the double murder of his wife and son in June 2021. The trial took place over 28 days, after which the jury only deliberated for a number of hours. Murdaugh’s attorney immediately called for a mistrial following the jury’s decision, which the judge denied.
The disgraced South Carolina attorney was found guilty on four charges – the murder of Margaret Murdagh, the murder of Paul Murdaugh, and two counts of possession of a weapon in the commitment of a violent crime in the murder of the aforementioned victims. Murdaugh faces between 30 years to life in prison for the murder charge per abc7NY.
On the night of the murders (June 7, 2021), Murdaugh reported the discovery of his wife and son’s bodies to the police at the family’s hunting lodge in Islandton, South Carolina. His alibi at the time was a visit to his terminally ill father and his mother, who suffers from dementia.
The investigation of the double murder was heavily scrutinized, with police reportedly failing to collect DNA evidence from the scene of the crime, which was ruined by rainfall, and allowed friends and family to walk through the area. Murdaugh became a person of interest in the case in October 2021 and was arrested in June 2022. His trial started on January 25 of this year.
Alex Murdaugh’s sentencing hearing has been scheduled for 9:30 am on Friday, March 3.
