Chris Hemsworth is back in action in Extraction 2 for Netflix. The Australian actor will be throwing punches once more in the upcoming sequel, and to promote the film, Netflix’s marketing has taken a rather interesting approach; rather than showing off Hemsworth’s brawn, they instead decided to go for something a little more unusual.
Movie marketing these days has become more dedicated than ever to capturing audiences’ interest and getting us excited about upcoming films. In this particular video, which Hemsworth posted on his Instagram account, they take the ASMR angle — which has been used in some film marketing campaigns.
Usually, ASMR is soothing to listen to, and though the Australian actor’s rugged voice is particularly pleasant, the rest of the noises are a little more… aggressive. When it comes to sound design for films, several tools and tricks are utilized; you’ll be sad to know that punches in real life do not sound how they do in cinema; actors aren’t really punching anyone anyways, so instead, a sound designer will create the noise and add it in post-production.
Here Hemsworth demonstrates the techniques used to create the gory sound effects needed for a film like Extraction 2, such as punching raw steaks, breaking celery, and stabbing a cantaloupe. To give us an idea of how gruesome the film will be, Hemsworth says, “In the film, I literally rip a man’s hand in half, and it sounded like this,” before demonstrating by pulling apart a bunch of celery.
With all the sounds made right by the microphone, it produces a rather visceral feeling, but it’s Hemsworth’s whispered tone that keeps us hooked if we are being honest. He finished the video by ensuring that no food would be wasted, adding, “It will all be eaten by me” before finally whispering, “I love you” to all his adoring fans.
Extraction 2 sees the return of Tyler Rake, and now he has a new mission, to save the imprisoned family of a Russian gangster. The film will be available on Netflix from tomorrow, June 16.
