On Sept. 7, 2020 — during what was still more or less the height of the global COVID-19 pandemic — David Harbour wed Lily Allen at the Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, Nev. in a ceremony officiated by a genuine Elvis impersonator. And say what you will about Vegas weddings, the couple is still going strong in 2023. Here’s what we know about how the couple met and married and how they keep their hunk of burning love ablaze.
January 2019
Harbour and Allen first met when the two attended the British Academy Film Awards annual tea party in January 2019. Allen had recently broken up with her boyfriend DJ Meridian Dan, who she began dating following her split from her first husband, builder and decorator, Sam Cooper in 2015. Harbour had been in relationships with actors Alison Sudol and Julia Stiles prior to meeting Allen.
August 2019
In August, the couple was spotted together while Harbour was in London during the filming of Black Widow. The “Smile” singer had been in Italy when she and the Stranger Things actor began texting each other. The two then attended an evening performance of the play The Lehman Trilogy at the Piccadilly Theater and were later spotted dining together. Harbour later told Express that he fell in love with Allen on their third date. “I was just in this phase, where I was like, I’m just going to be brutally honest about everything, because why lie? And I told her something about my life, about my beliefs…” he said. “It would take a really extraordinary person to be accepting of the things that I said. And I remember thinking: Wow, that’s somebody I want to be around.”
October 2019
Allen and Harbour were spotted kissing during a walk around New York City. A few days later the pair made things official with their first red carpet appearance together at a Skin Cancer Foundation event. The two also attended a Saturday Night Live after-party together following Harbour’s hosting gig. Allen later shared photos from an SNL sketch parodying a SoulCycle class, zooming in on Harbour’s shirtless bicep and captioning the pic “Mine.”
May 2020
Allen had set off engagement rumors as far back as December 2019 when she was spotted wearing a diamond ring but she didn’t confirm the rumors until May of the next year. When a fan pointed out the ring on an Instagram post Allen identified it as “Um … engagement ring??????????????” according to Us Magazine.
Harbour would later tell Jimmy Kimmel that his decision to pop the question was inspired by a shared bike ride with Allen’s two daughters from her marriage to Cooper.
“The little one was riding along and she was going like, ‘David, Dad, David, Dad.’ Because the ‘d’ got her confused. And the older one got very upset with that, which I understand, and she was like, ‘He’s not our dad! He’s not our dad! And the younger one was like, ‘Well, what is he? He’s kind of our dad.’ She’s like, ‘No, he’s not.’ ‘He’s kind of our stepdad.’ ‘No, he’s not.’ And she goes, ‘What is he?’ And she goes, ‘He’s just some guy in our lives!’ … I was like, ‘I need to marry this woman.’”
September 2020
“In a wedding officiated by the king himself, the people’s princess wed her devoted, low-born, but kind credit card holder in a beautiful ceremony lit by the ashen skies courtesy of a burning state miles away in the midst of a global pandemic,” Harbour wrote in an Instagram post celebrating his nuptials. The pair later shared post-wedding In-N-Out burgers with the kids.
October 2020
Although Harbour is definitely “Dad” to his step-daughters now, Allen revealed in October 2020 that she intends to expand the family after a few years. “I’m in a really good place. I don’t know if I’d mess with my hormones, at this particular point,” she told The Sunday Times.
May 2022
The two attended last year’s Met Gala together and Allen posted an image with the caption “Zaddy Warbucks and me at the #metgala2022 in @chanelofficial,” The following day, she posted a selfie taken before the event, and joked that, “This is the only other photo i have in my phone from met night. Sorry. I’m so bad at content.”
September 2022
Harbour and Allen celebrated their second anniversary in 2022. “Happy Anniversary @dkharbour . Love ya ❤️,” Allen posted on Instagram.
