The White Lotus star and 2023 SAG Award winner, Jennifer Coolidge has teamed up with Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s Oscar-nominated directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for a photo shoot of epic proportions.
The actress announced on Twitter that she was on the cover of W Magazine. But what made this cover photo interesting is that it’s not just some generic photo shoot where one just sits in a studio candidly with a boring background. The actress had the help of the Daniels (Kwan and Scheinert) to create this Power Rangers-inspired photoshoot for the publication.
The W Magazine article titled “Jennifer Coolidge Will Destroy You,” explained more details about what happened behind the scenes during the photoshoot. According to the Daniels, the shoot was to give tribute to a genre of Japanese cinema called “tokusatsu.” An example of notable media that had this style of filmmaking are the Power Rangers, Ultraman, and Godzilla. Kwan talks about the charm this style of filmmaking had and what makes it stand out from other types of filmmaking.
“Tokusatsu is so well done, but the special effects are always kind of handmade. If you look at the stuff from the ’60s, you can feel the fingerprint. You can tell there’s somebody inside the costume. There’s something very charming about that, especially nowadays, when you can create anything digitally and nothing impresses you anymore.”
It was also noted in the magazine that Coolidge had fun during the shoot, claiming that she was enjoying playing the role of this superpowered being. She also claimed that she was never asked to be in a photoshoot like this and praised the Daniels’ creativity to make this shoot super fun and one of “the best things she’s ever been involved in.”
“The film business tires people out. But I swear to god, I felt like I was getting together with little kids. They were like these sort of child prodigies who are super, super smart and just super creative. I’ve never been asked to do a shoot like this: I have weapons, take down small cities, pick up cars and throw them. I don’t know if I will ever be this surprised again. It was one of the best things I have ever been involved in.”
Over on Twitter, Coolidge thanked everyone involved for letting her live out her “Godzilla / Rita Repulsa fantasy.” And it’s no surprise that this shoot wowed fans for both her and the Everything Everywhere directors. They were able to make this comedic actress give off these supervillain vibes.
Nobody expected this crossover to happen. But it did and it looks really freaking amazing! Fingers crossed that Coolidge and the Daniels would work together on a film project in the future.
