Actor and comedian Jason Sudeikis recently recalled the not-so-kind words his Hall Pass co-star Owen Wilson told him while appearing on YouTube’s Hot Ones.
For context, the 2011 film follows two husbands experiencing various challenges within their marriage. Because of that, their wives allow them to get a “hall pass” for a week to indulge in any activity without consequences. Hall Pass also stars Christina Applegate, Jenna Fischer, Nicky Whelan, Richard Jenkins, Stephen Merchant, Larry Joe Campbell, J.B. Smooth, Bruce Thomas, Tyler Hoechlin, and many others.
On the May 25th episode of Hot Ones — a series where celebrity guests are grilled by host Sean Evans on numerous topics related to their life and career while trying to eat gradually spicier coated chicken wings — Sudeikis revealed that the interview reminded him of a time that Wilson commented on his eating habits when they — alongside Stephen Merchant, J.B. Smoove, and Larry Joe Campbell — filmed a sports bar scene in the movie.
In the particular shot that panned to each character at various moments, the men were eating chicken wings when Wilson noticed that Sudeikis took his role as Fred a little bit seriously because he continued eating even after the camera wasn’t facing his direction. The Ted Lasso star said while recounting his first lead movie role,
“This reminds me, I did this movie Hall Pass, it was me and Owen Wilson. But then also Steve Merchant, JB Smoove, Larry Joe Campbell, we did a scene taking place at a sports bar and we’re eating wings. It was my first time being in a big studio movie, like ‘lead Owen and I are on the poster type thing.’ We’re going around and we shoot like all people around the thing. You know you have to keep moving the camera. You have the time and money which they usually do for studio movies and there were hot wings… So we’re eating these wings, I’m eating them while the camera is on Owen.”
Following Sudeikis’ remark, Evans interjected and mentioned that the star continuing to eat the food even when not on camera is frowned upon. The 47-year-old agreed and disclosed that because it was his first studio film, he had no idea what the protocols were. A laughing Sudeikis would add that during a break, Wilson approached him and stated that he wondered what the We Are The Millers star would look like if he “worked out and took care of himself.”
“At some point I’m eating them and he’s just like ‘Gosh you just put anything in your body.’ I’m like ‘oh, yeah.’ He goes ‘I’d be so curious what you look like if you actually worked out and took care of yourself.'”
Sudeikis clearly hasn’t developed a complex. His hit show Ted Lasso is in its final season. We’ll keep you abreast on what he’s up to next.
