When it comes to Marvel’s Mount Rushmore, Samuel L. Jackson definitely makes the cut. Involved since the birth of the MCU as we know it, Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury is one of the most iconic characters in the franchise — lately though, he’s been nowhere to be found. Thankfully Secret Invasion on Disney Plus looks to finally explain where the heck Nick Fury has been all these years.
Centered around Fury’s relationship with the shape-shifting Skrulls, Secret Invasion details just that — a secret invasion from an extremist Skrull faction that has broken away from their larger, and more peaceful group. Sitting for an interview with Vanity Fair, Samuel L. Jackson detailed how and why the Skrulls went form ally to enemy. Spoiler; it’s his fault.
“‘Nick had a whole Skrull spy network because they could shape-shift and go places that people couldn’t go,’ he explained. ‘They kept their word. They worked for him, but he hasn’t done what he said he was going to do. They want a home. They want to live. They want to live like they are. They want to live in their skin. They don’t want to live in ours.’”
In order to live amongst us humans, Skrulls have been forced to change the way they look in order to fit in. Can you really blame them for being a tad upset? Led by Ben Mendelsohn‘s Talos, the Skrulls are tired of waiting around.
Also joined by Emilia Clarke as Talos’s rebellious daughter, Secret Invasion is going to be one-of-a-kind.
“’He told the Skrulls they were trying to find them a place to live,’ Jackson went on to say. ‘He promised them they were going to find them a planet or somewhere they could be. And that’s not going so well.’”
Unlike anything Marvel has done before (barring perhaps The Winter Soldier), Secret Invasion aesthetically takes on a much more spy-centric tone. Espionage, secrecy, betrayal — all that good stuff. Which, according to Samuel L. Jackson, is what keeps things intersting.
“‘We don’t know who’s a friend, who’s the enemy,’ he shared. ‘There’s a political aspect that kind of fits into where we are right now: Who’s okay? Who’s not? What happens when people get afraid and don’t understand other people? You can’t tell who’s innocent and who’s guilty in this particular instance.’”
With its June 21 release date, fans won’t have to wait long to find out exactly what Secret Invasion is all about. As a homecoming for Nick Fury, we’re certain it’s going to be a wild ride.
