It’s official: the Screen Actors Guild has authorized a strike. Such a turn of events in a union with a large membership and the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike will effectively shut down Hollywood for the time being.
According to BBC, actors who are SAG members will cease all work starting at midnight Los Angeles time on Friday morning. The immediate next step that will unfold beginning in the early hours of Friday will be a mass picket event in which protestors will march with signs outside of major studios — but who are the marquee-worthy actors expected to show up at the picket line proper?
Major actors who are expected to picket due to the SAG strike
According to their website, we can’t provide an exhaustive list of who will show up at the picket line due to SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) representing more than 160,000 individuals. However, we can name-drop a few notable individuals who have publicly expressed their support of the strike and who we feel will likely show up in the field.
Margot Robbie
Margot Robbie, the star of the forthcoming Barbie film, has voiced her unequivocal support for the strike on the red carpet while also revealing she is a SAG member herself. Assuming her schedule allows it, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Robbie clutching a hand-drawn sign herself when the physical protest takes place.
Ginger Gonzaga
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law star Ginger Gonzaga has already expressed that she will be in the streets in stunning fashion during the SAG strike if her Twitter account is any indication.
Mica Burton
Star Trek: Picard actor Mica Burton let it be known in a Twitter post that a broken ankle would not cause her to sit out on the picket line — it would only give her an excuse to “decorate my knee scooter.”
Mark Ruffalo
Avengers: End Game star Mark Ruffalo has been vocal on Twitter about supporting the SAG strike. Because he also joined the picket line of protestors related to the WGA strike, we think it’s a safe bet he will do the same for his acting peers.
Tina Fey
Like Mark Ruffalo, Tina Fey was also seen picketing with WGA protestors. Given that the 30 Rock star is also an actor herself, we imagine she will be outside the major studios when the protests unfold.
Fred Armisen
Fellow Saturday Night Live star Fred Armisen was seen shoulder-to-shoulder alongside Fey during WGA protests, making us fairly certain he will hit the streets when the SAG picket commences. Armisen was also one of hundreds of actors who co-signed a letter vowing to strike last month.
In addition to those listed above, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a few others. For instance, according to BBC, Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, and Emily Blunt all exited the premiere of Oppenheimer Thursday to coincide with the strike, so they may all show up on the picket line. Other signees of the letter mentioned above include Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Quinta Brunson, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see them marching and holding signs in solidarity. Other actors who have voiced support for the strike on social media include Bob Odenkirk, Cynthia Nixon, Jamie Lee Curtis, and David Hayter.
