Taylor Swift fans are gearing up to bring their favorite singer/songwriter a warm blanket, a cup of tea, and their shoulders to cry on as they noticed Swift tearing up at a recent show in Chicago. Her emotional singing during a fan-favorite but very emotional tune caused them to feel all the things, too.
In early April, rumors of Swift’s breakup with Alwyn were “confirmed” by sources who revealed the relationship had simply “run its course,” but anyone who has been in a long-term relationship knows that a split is never simple, never easy. After six years together, you’ve built a strong and impactful bond with a person; you can’t just turn off when the relationship ends.
There are levels of comfort and reliability that you might not even notice you’ve built, and there are things your body and mind have grown used to on a subconscious level, so all things considered, it goes without saying that Swift is going through a lot as that chapter of her life comes to a close. In recent weeks, a rumored romance with Matty Healy began taking over Swift’s reputation in the media — with some fans struggling to wrap their minds around the rumored pairing, but it appears they’ve shared their last kiss as new rumors allege their “breakup.”
A Reddit post shared by a fan shows her singing “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” and she appears to get choked up as she sings these particular lyrics:
“Wondering if I dodged a bullet or just lost the love of my life.”
The song is a bit emotional already, and belting out those lyrics would stir up some emotion in Swift. She separated from her long-time partner earlier this year, whether or not she was really dating Healy; if that has ended also, there are some big emotions she’s undeniably trying to sort through.
Now, we’re not saying we’re professional detectives of Swift’s life and romance by any means, but we have a feeling if those lyrics did choke her up, it was more than just because her bond with Healy may have also shifted in its existence. It’s that she’s dealing with loss in different capacities, and as the rumor mill swirls today with a Swift/Healy breakup, her fans are thinking the emotion in that video makes a little more sense.
TMZ first reported that the pair were no longer together, and while “sources” claim it was always casual and that no one is “shocked” by their split, it’s worth noting that a loss is a loss, and they all hurt in some capacity.
This fan pointed out that they’d been to more than one of Swift’s Eras tour stops, and this one seemed different. However, she constantly remains a beacon of light for her fans, reminding them — even with tears in her eyes — that she loves them.
Another fan points out that they’re not in the business of overanalyzing Swift’s personal life but that she did seem “deeply sad” when she was at the show.
Swift’s heart has always been on public display, and she’s sorting through some deeply emotional pieces of a very personal story right now. She’s likely still trying to figure out what her future looks like while balancing the now, and the loss of Alwyn and Healy, in their own ways, have impacted her life.
It’s also not just possible, but likely, that she is completely drained right now, physically and emotionally — which this fan brought up in response to the initial Reddit post.
In true Swift fashion, the crowd often cheers her up, but they still noticed an attempt at happiness that felt like she just couldn’t hold onto it.
This fan noticed it a few times, especially after “Champagne Problems,” a song Alwyn helped Swift write.
Of course, some Swifties say she could have just been having an off day, having too much on her plate for too long. Performing at multiple shows across the country on top of traveling long hours and being away from home could do that to a person.
In addition, she’s also experiencing some incredible highs and lows simultaneously, so it goes without saying that feeling one extreme emotion for a moment, followed by another the next, could be emotionally and mentally taxing. Anyone who has experienced a lot of good and then had heartbreak thrown in, too, can relate.
No matter the cause of the tears in Swift’s eyes, we hope she has a strong support system around her and that she gets some downtime to rest soon. Swift’s fans are eagle-eyed, and they’ll keep her as happy as possible in audiences around the U.S. for the next few months. We have a feeling that’ll do her heart some good as she glances in the crowd and sees her appreciative and loving fans holding up their hands in the shape of hearts and smiling back at her.
