Ever since her breakup with Joe Alwyn, Swifties have kept their eyes peeled for updates about any potential love in the pop star’s life. So, when dating rumors about Taylor Swift and The 1975’s Matty Healy surfaced, all attention was steered towards gathering evidence that could prove these rumors true.
Saying so, some recent snaps of the pair hanging out in New York including a kiss at Casa Cipriani served as fodder for further gossip on the subject, and adding to this is The Sun’s statement about them being “madly in love” with each other which has drawn more curiosities to their assumed romance.
However, the ongoing rumors have led many to dig into Healy’s past and churn out some of his abysmal actions ranging from inappropriate stage behaviors to outrageous displays of misogyny and racism.
While Healy has been rightfully called out for his toxicity, many have taken this very opportunity to slam Swift for her questionable partner choices. In case you are wondering about Healy’s wrongdoings, here are a few noteworthy entries.
What are the problematic behaviors exhibited by Matty Healy over the years?
It all started with his public condemnation of Taylor Swift. Swift and Healy have known each other for nearly a decade now, and the duo began to attract dating rumors ever since. It happened back in 2014 when the ‘Blank Space’ singer was spotted at Healy’s show in New York. As per Healy’s account, the duo exchanged numbers at which he expressed his excitement about dating Swift, calling her a “sensation”.
However, Healy’s perspective of Taylor drastically changed when in 2016 he regarded the mere probability of dating Swift as ‘emasculating’ in his interview with Us Weekly.
“She wasn’t a big impact on my life. It’s just interesting to me how interested the world is about Taylor Swift. The reason I mention that is because if I had [properly] gone out with Taylor Swift, I would’ve been, ‘F*cking hell, I am not being Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.’ You know, ‘F*ck. That.’ That’s also a man thing, a demasculinating [sic], emasculating thing.”
This is but a tiny proportion of events that catapulted headlines about Healy and his raging, tumultuous conduct. Immense vitriol and backlash has been hurled at the 34-year-old musician for making a blatantly racist remark against Ice Spice.
Healy’s offensive remarks against the rapper in The Adam Friedland Show in February caused a furor, leading Apple and Spotify to stop the episode from streaming on their sites. This hasn’t stopped certain clips of the podcast from circulating on social media where the unholy trio consisting of Healy, co-host Mike Mullen and host Adam Friedland were heard mocking Ice Spice by mimicking her accent and making racist comments about her East Asian ethnic background.
In February of this year, Matty appeared on a podcast where he, his friend & the host laughed as they made racist comments, this included calling @icespicee_ a “chubby Chinese lady”, and mocking API accents. The episode was so offensive + racist that Apple and Spotify removed it. pic.twitter.com/Lbok9nd3nO

Healy carried this obscenity a bit further when he used the words, “chubby Chinese lady” and “one of the innuit Spice Girls” to refer to the rapper. Healy’s subsequent apology statement for Ice Spice didn’t divert the public’s overall takeaway from the podcast which doesn’t halt racism and chauvinistic remarks but stretches further to launching attacks on the LGBTQ+ community and gay people.
At one point, Healy referred to gay people as “the gays” and said how “a lot of them” liked getting queerbaited. Things only got worse when he and Friedland chatted about The 1975 frontman being caught masturbating to “Ghetto Gaggers”, a hardcore porn site known for showcasing racial and sexual degradation of women of color by white men. Healy along with the others jokingly commented on how he was caught pleasuring himself to one such gruesome video. Absolutely none of the members took any offense at this confession which is the sort of behavior for them to be slapped with bitter criticisms.
The podcast aside, there have been various other honorary mentions which warrant keen attention. Like when he got on stage and started to get ready for another racist rant before being stopped by his bandmates. Or when he did a Nazi salute, sucked a fan’s thumb, or used the message of Black Lives Matter to promote his song. The list just goes on and on.
Healy’s past controversies and obnoxious outpouring on the podcast have led many fans to question Swift’s poor partner choices. Considering both Swift and Healy have been hanging out a lot lately, many people are asking the pop star to start reconsidering her choice of friends and hold the problematic people in her life accountable for their actions.
