What better way to open a presser than some good old-fashioned demon killing? Well, that’s exactly what Bethesda did when the lights dimmed on the publisher’s first-ever E3 conference, treating fans in attendance to the very first gameplay trailer for its upcoming Doom reboot.
For those who vented their frustration at last month’s minute teaser, Bethesda heard your criticism loud and clear. Built from the ground up for ID Tech 6 – iD Software’s in-house game engine – the extensive gameplay clip is essentially a more polished version of the build showcased during Quakecon last year. It’s certainly buttery smooth, showcasing enough blood, guts and menacing weaponry to make up for any lost time. In fact, given the brief nod to the chainsaw, we have every confidence that this latest entry into the franchise can stand shoulder to shoulder with the genre’s greats.
Beyond that, Bethesda also unveiled a teaser for Doom‘s multiplayer segment, which looks to inject the intoxicating sense of fun that the franchise has become renown for. There’s also word of the classic 4-player Team Deathmatch mode, a Call of Duty-like hoard mode and the rather intriguing Snapmap feature, allowing players to share their own modes and bespoke arenas with others around the globe.
It’s a sign of the times that an age-old franchise is getting a feature that speaks to the Twitch community, and we’re excited to see how it pans out post-launch. It’s understood that iD will launch the shooter across PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in spring 2016.
