Citing ongoing server connection issues, Amazon has updated their SimCity listing to remove the ability to purchase a digital download of Electronic Arts’ latest online-only, DRM-filled game. As of the time of publication, the online retailer is still allowing the purchase of the physical DVD, however, they have issued the following “Important Note” to all potential buyers:

“Many customers are having issues connecting to the “SimCity” servers. EA is actively working to resolve these issues, but at this time we do not know when the issue will be fixed. Please visit https://help.ea.com/en/simcity/simcity for more information.”

In addition to the warning, Amazon is also reportedly offering (and following though with) refunds to any customer who purchased SimCity though their site.

Aside from Amazon’s efforts to protect their customers from purchasing a copy of Electronic Arts’ currently broken game, those who have already fallen prey to SimCity are speaking out through the site’s Customer Reviews. Currently there are over 800 one star reviews and 49 two star reviews (versus 22 five star reviews). Some choice quotes from the angry mob read:

“Bottom line: Go up to a random stranger, preferably a musclehead, hand him your $60 and ask him to punch you in the face. You’ll get more out of your money, and it’ll be less painful to watch.” – Jonny

“Avoid this game. Until EA either removes the DRM completely or allows offline play and saves, this game is nothing more than an example on how a company can both rip off AND alienate its fanbase.” – Kyle

“The majority of my experience has been watching a Server is Busy error and waiting for a 20 minute timer to count down to 0. Once it does, I get a network server error and it resets. I’m giving the game 1 star because it’s been a great way to re-heat my enchiladas in the oven. Otherwise, I’d give this game a 0.” – Mark

In contrast, Electronic Arts’ Origin service is still more than happy to sell SimCity PC downloads, even though they are perfectly aware that customers who purchase the game will be unable to play it.

[Update] Amazon has put SimCity back up for sale on their website, however, the warning about the server issues remains.
