Amplitude Gets An Unlockable FreQuency Mode

Developer Harmonix is close to unleashing their PlayStation 4 title Amplitude, based on a PlayStation 2 game from the company's earlier days. Since its successful Kickstarter campaign last year, the game has been pushed back nearly a year from its original March 2015 release, but rhythm game fans don't have to wait much longer, as Amplitude will be available for download on January 5.

Those who donated enough money to the Kickstarter will get to play the title starting today, as Harmonix has begun emailing PSN vouchers. A PlayStation 3 version is also in the works, but its release date has not been announced yet.

What’s interesting to note here is the inclusion of FreQuency mode, a nod to the series’ roots. The original 2003 Amplitude was itself a sequel to the 2001 title FreQuency, which had players navigate each instrument’s note path in a circular tunnel shape, as seen above. Amplitude switched the layout to be a flat horizontal road of sorts, with all tracks going from left to right. Harmonix has admitted that there has always been a huge divide between players when it comes to layout preferences, so they decided to offer the option for both shapes to please everyone.
