If you fancy revisiting one of the earlier entries in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series or just simply want a free game to play, you’re in luck – the publisher is giving away Assassin’s Creed III throughout the month of December. The last in a string of seven games being made available for free as part of Ubisoft’s 30th anniversary celebrations, the third main entry in the historical stealth series can be downloaded via Uplay from December 7 until the end of the month.

The sequel to 2011’s Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, Assassin’s Creed III marked a departure from the Italian Renaissance setting of the so-called Ezio trilogy, instead taking place during the height of the American Revolution with new character Connor taking the reins as lead protagonist. The transition is often looked upon as one of the most uneasy of the franchise, with those having grown accustomed to the charismatic Ezio Auditore de Firenze deeming Connor a poor and rather bland successor to the throne.

Of course, if you’re one such fan that looks upon Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations as being the pinnacle in a now very long sequence of games, then Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection is likely to be much more appealing to your tastes. As for future Assassin’s Creed titles, Ubisoft has confirmed that one is in development, although it may not see a 2017 release.

Multiple different historical periods have been proposed by fans for the follow-up to Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, with Ancient Egypt appearing to be the most popular. Expect an official reveal from Ubisoft at some point next year.
