Though the formal reveal isn’t expected until later today, early reports have surfaced relating to Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate that appear to suggest Ubisoft’s upcoming sequel will feature both male and female protagonists.

First spotted by Kotaku, the sources claim that Syndicate is to orbit around a pair of assassin siblings Jacob and Evie, who have ties with the criminal underbelly of Victorian London, the game’s setting.

While previous Assassin’s Creed installments have centered on female protagonists – most notably Aveline from Liberation – Ubisoft bore the brunt of a community backlash following a revelation that the French publisher cut the playable female characters from last year’s Unity co-operate segments, claiming that such an undertaking would have required “double the animations.”

According to Kotaku’s report, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate will give players the chance to switch between Jacob and Evie at will, though story content will purportedly be divided 75/25, with Jacob getting the larger portion. Of course, all of this remains unconfirmed at the time of writing, as Ubisoft is playing its cards close to its chest in preparation for the sequel’s reveal later today.

Other speculative tidbits that have been doing the rounds include a rumor that Syndicate won’t feature a multiplayer component, and that it is due to launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC later this year. Currently, it’s the latter tidbit that appears the more likely of the two.
