It’s hard to improve on perfection, but that’s exactly what Overhaul Games set out to do with Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. The complete remake of the 1998 classic was released onto PCs today, bringing one of the best RPGs of yore to a brand new generation of gamers.
For those of you too young to remember Baldur’s Gate or simply weren’t introduced to it in the late 90s, it was one of the most celebrated D&D style fantasy RPG game series of the time. However, like most games of that era, it aged about as well as my mother’s apple pie. Meaning that while it was fantastic when it first game out of the oven, I’m pretty sure pies aren’t supposed to grow hair and chase you down the hallway if you make eye contact. Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is available exclusively through Beamdog for $19.99 and promises to bring the original game back to life with some much needed upgrades to the graphics and gameplay.
The classic intro cinematic was released today showing exactly what type of changes we can expect, and I’m sure it’s going to incur the wrath of some of the older nerds. While the storyboard art style looks crisp, it’s missing that character that comes from a fully acted-out cinematic in my eyes.
