Indie developer Supergiant Games along with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment made the announcement today that their upcoming action RPG downloadable title Bastion, will be the first of the games to be released as part of the Xbox Live Arcade’s Summer of Arcade this July.
In Bastion, players will take on the role of a character simply called the Kid and will be tasked with constructing a new world out of the remnants of the past after the destruction caused by the Calamity, an event that shattered the world into pieces, leaving it as nothing but floating islands. Players will have to confront strange beasts and forge a variety of customizable weapons as they explore the broken world in search of supplies and survivors.
The game actually looks a bit like Disgaea with its hand painted environments and smaller areas. However, it should manage to avoid falling into the strategy RPG niche thanks to an action based battle system that should see a closer comparison to something like DeathSpank. Though the one drawback that I could see happen with Bastion is players getting tired of listening to the narrator, but you never know.
Gamers can get their hands on this game when it becomes available via Xbox Live Arcade on July 20th, 2011 for 1200 Microsoft points. It is also planned for PC, but the only information given was that it will be out on that format later this year.
