Like others before it, Blizzard’s Overwatch – besides being a terrific, almost perfectly-tuned team-based shooter – sells itself on offering diversity by way of its large roster of eclectic characters all with a unique set of abilities. Because of that very fact though, maintaining a general power equilibrium between every single character can often prove to be rather difficult, a problem that appears to be affecting one of Overwatch’s support characters – Symmetra.
According to comments made by Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan to Business Insider UK, the team are looking at making several changes to the character in order to make her a more appealing pick. Currently, Symmetra is one of Overwatch‘s “least-played heroes,” according to Kaplan, adding that “she’s a hero who’s very situational and she actually gets played a fair bit, but she gets switched off of. What happens commonly is players will play her on defence on the first part of a point, and then when they’ve lost that point, then they’ll switch off of Symmetra.”
The suggestion that Symmetra is only a viable pick during certain points of a match is a perfectly feasible one, but another likely explanation for the data could be that players try to utilize her abilities, but give up shortly after out of frustration. Whatever the case may be, Kaplan says that the defensive and healing hybrid character is “definitely” on Blizzard’s watch list, although he admits that players probably won’t see any changes go live until “probably some time in November.”
