Though the first half of Tim Schafer and Double Fine’s old-school point-and-click adventure title, Broken Age, has been available for backers of its much-publicized Kickstarter for a little while now, those who didn’t help fund the project now have a chance to try it out as the game is available starting today on Steam for PC, Mac, & Linux for $24.99.
Telling two parallel stories that you can switch between at any time, the game follows both Vella, a girl who defies her village’s tradition of sacrificing maidens to a gargantuan monster and seeks a way to destroy it, as well as Shay, a boy living in isolation on a spaceship who yearns for real adventure.
To commemorate the game’s release, Double Fine has released a launch trailer showcasing both the gorgeous hand-painted visuals as well as some behind-the-scenes footage of Schafer, some of the voice cast and the complicated development process. It’s worth a watch, even if you’ve already played the game.
I reviewed Broken Age: Act 1 shortly after its release for Kickstarter backers and found it to be a charming and artistic title that adventure fans will surely enjoy. Hopefully it will find an expansive audience on Steam, as Schafer has confirmed that sales of the first half will go into the making of the second half, which is due out later this year.
