Infinity Ward may be next in line to take the reins of Activision’s Call of Duty franchise as per the publisher’s three-tier development cycle, but that hasn’t prevented Advanced Warfare developer Sledgehammer Games from teasing fans of its next project.

In what is surely a wink and a nudge toward 2017’s installment in the first-person shooter juggernaut, the company’s Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer Glen Schofield took to Twitter earlier today to touch base with Sledgehammer’s next release. Skating around the specifics, Schofield revealed he is “so f**king stoked” about the game, and that the creative team has kept one ear to the ground in order to acknowledge fan feedback.

Sledgehammer’s first foray into the Call of Duty franchise came with Modern Warfare 3, a time when it was forced to shelve the Vietnam-set third-person CoD game Fog of War. In 2014, the developer broke new ground with the release of Advanced Warfare, a new sub-franchise under the series’ umbrella, though the company hasn’t ruled out a return to the shelved shooter.

Based on the previous cycle, Call of Duty 2016 will likely be helmed by Infinity Ward, though nothing is set in stone just yet, and considering the confidence that Schofield expressed earlier today, reshuffling the deck to allow for Sledgehammer to take point next year is by no means out of the question.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 2? Revisiting the shelved third-person installment in Activision’s juggernaut? Or something new entirely?
