Capcom And Ninja Theory: “Working Towards The Greatest Devil May Cry”

Publishing veteran Capcom has been trying to reassure fans that the upcoming reboot of the Devil May Cry franchise (now being oh so cunningly called ‘DMC’....laziness?) will rise above the controversy and deliver a top class game. Ninja Theory are taking the helm with the new Dante movement and it was the team behind Enslaved that made the tricky decision of completely changing the main man into a younger, scruffier, and sleep deprived kid.

Publishing veteran Capcom has been trying to reassure fans that the upcoming reboot of the Devil May Cry franchise (now being oh so cunningly called ‘DMC’….laziness?) will rise above the controversy and deliver a top class game. Ninja Theory are taking the helm with the new Dante movement and it was the team behind Enslaved that made the tricky decision of completely changing the main man into a younger, scruffier, and sleep deprived kid.

Understandably fans have been very concerned with Dante’s new image despite the tidy track record Ninja Theory has. Capcom are seemingly trying to re-energise the franchise and inject a new lease of life into the iconic character. A Capcom staff member posted on the official Capcom forums saying encouraging things like:

“Capcom bring to the table years of experience with design of fighting systems, characters and the little things that make DMC, well DMC.”

“Combine all the best elements of Capcom and Ninja Theory you will have one of the greatest DMC titles ever created… and that people is what we’re working towards.”

“But we haven’t handed over the family silver to some strangers we are working with Ninja Theory on this together. We believe that by going down this route we can breathe new life into the franchise and make a game that sits above DMC3 for this generation.”

More than one person has noted how alike Ninja Theory’s Tameem Antoniades and the new Dante appear, joking that the identity crisis is some kind of projected vanity. Teasing aside, I’m going to wait for more info before I make a judgement. I’ve been a fan for a long time so I’m in no rush to ruin my relationship with the series, hopefully this left turn will straighten out.
