During their E3 2014 digital press conference today, Nintendo revealed that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will be coming to the Wii U this holiday season.
Developed by Nintendo EAD Tokyo, Treasure Tracker is actually an expansion of a mini-game that was previously featured in Super Mario 3D World. In the game, players control Captain Toad as he navigates a series of dangerous levels in order to the reach the stars at the end of each one. Although he is unable to jump, the Captain does have the ability to dig through plants in search of gold coins or throwable turnips, as well as the ability to dash.
Taking a page from the book of Fez, players can also manipulate the camera in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker in order to discover hidden areas featuring bonus treasure. The game will additionally make use of the various features of the Wii U GamePad, as the touch screen can be used to manipulate platforms and the gyroscopic controls can be used for proper aiming.
Even as someone who doesn’t own a Nintendo Wii U and thus, has not had a chance to play Super Mario 3D World, I have to say I was impressed with what I saw from Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Sure, it may not be the most innovative title, but the colorful graphics are eye-catching, and the gameplay appears to be good, simplistic fun.
We will have more information on Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker in the lead-up to its release later this year, so stay tuned.
