CD Projekt Red may have effectively placed Cyberpunk 2077 on a shelf until 2017, but that doesn’t mean the Polish developer isn’t prepared to talk excitedly about the future project.
Still in its nascent stages, there’s little hope of the sci-fi title releasing anything soon, which begs the question: why did the studio release that rather excellent teaser trailer in the first place? Well, according to CD Projekt Red Co-Founder Marcin Iwinski, the sizzle reel was more of a litmus test than anything else, designed to gauge interest in the IP before dedicating resources to the cause.
[zerggaming]Speaking to IGN, here’s what Iwinski had to share:
“We released the Cyberpunk teaser trailer because we wanted to see how gamers felt about it,” Iwinski explained. “We were super excited about the project internally, but what if it wasn’t the right thing [for us]? But the response has been incredible. Now it’s just up to us to deliver. We’re hard at work on it.”
Cyberpunk 2077 may slowly be pulling members of the core creative team toward it as development on the game begins to pick up speed, but Iwinski noted that The Witcher III: Wild Hunt and its upcoming expansions remain a priority at the company.
“You can craft swords for 12 years, but you might get burnt out. People might want to leave and go work on something else. We’re excited to switch to guns. We intended to keep [the team] energized with Cyberpunk. The core team is working The Witcher 3’s expansions, but more and more people are moving over onto Cyberpunk.”
Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine are acting as the RPG’s two mainline DLCs, which will add 30-plus hours of new content into the critically acclaimed threequel later this year. As for Cyberpunk 2077, don’t hold your breath for any information pertaining to a release date or the game’s story for some time yet.
