New screenshots of Dark Souls III have surfaced on the internet thanks to Japanese magazine Famitsu, and they look absolutely fantastic. Sadly, we’ve got no native Japanese speakers at hand to give us a run-down of each image description, but From Software have updated their Facebook page with some little tidbits to get your mind racing in anticipation.
The first enemy that will test your worth is Iudex Gundyr. Once you secure passage to Firelink Shrine, you’ll meet various characters – Including Hawkwood, a fugitive of Farron’s Undead Legion and a mysterious Firekeeper that will help you on your path. As the fire fades, only embers remain…
So, let’s decipher that painfully short paragraph a little, shall we? Iudex Gundyr, who is said by From to be the player’s first big obstacle, is likely the giant knight who’s about to slash you in half (image gallery above). As part of the fight, he’ll apparently transform into a horrific black monstrosity made out of writhing tentacles.
Hawkwood is a new NPC you’ll find hunched over in deep thought at Firelink Shrine – yes, you read that correctly, Firelink Shrine is explicitly mentioned, but we’re not sure if it’s the same one from the first game or just a generic term used for important bonfires.
But what about all of the other images? We honestly have no idea what their significance (if any) is, but by god do they look gorgeous. There’s even some concept art thrown in for good measure, featuring all sorts of armor and scenery.
If you couldn’t already tell, we’re super excited for From Software’s threequel, but we’ve still got some time to burn. Dark Souls III releases for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on April 12 for North America and Europe.
