Dead Rising Franchise Not Dead, Capcom Working On A Follow-Up

Even though the zombie craze has arguably begun to wane over the the last couple of years, it’s safe to say that gamers still relish the simple pleasures of killing hordes of the ol’ living dead. You just have to look at the scores of zombie-slaughtering games that are currently in development, like OverKill’s The Walking Dead and Saber Interactive’s World War Z, to name but a few.

However, we can now add a new title to the Z-list. Case in point: Capcom are ready to go back to the bloody zombie well with one of their tentpole franchises. Yes, that’s right, the Japanese publisher has recently announced that they’re busy at work developing a brand new installment in their popular Dead Rising franchise.

In a recent blog post, Capcom revealed the closure of one of its mobile games called Puzzle Fighter. To sweeten the bad news, however, the company also announced that they’d instead chosen to focus their efforts on a new Dead Rising title, which is sure to put a smile on many people’s faces.

Here’s the official rundown, direct from the Capcom Unity blog post:

As huge fans of Puzzle Fighter ourselves, the team here at Capcom Game Studio Vancouver is proud to have created a new version of the game that’s unique and enjoyable. As the studio is dedicating its focus to our flagship Dead Rising franchise, we have decided to sunset Puzzle Fighter.

Though some fans may be upset by the closure of Puzzle Fighter, the company’s attempting to make the remaining time with the mobile game a little bit sweeter, as the Classic Mode special limited event will run from now until the servers close at the end of July.

On a more positive note, a new instalment in the Dead Rising franchise sounds super promising. Despite lacklustre sales for the Xbox One timed exclusive, Dead Rising 4, it was pretty well received with critics. Additionally, a PS4 version dubbed Dead Rising 4: Frank’s Big Package was released recently too, and our very own Eric Hall described it as so: “Filled to the brim with quality content,” and that it’s, “a blood-soaked holiday adventure that may not please purists, but will delight those looking for a good time.”

Although details on this new Dead Rising remain scarce at the moment, we’ll be sure to let you know once Capcom releases more intel. In the meantime, feel free to head on down to the comments section and let us know if you’re interested in seeing another outing from the franchise.
