Capcom announced today during their Tokyo Game Show presentation that Deep Down will be a free-to-play game on the upcoming PlayStation 4.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the news on his Twitter account, and revealed that an open beta is being planned for sometime close to the February 22nd launch of the PS4 in Japan.

Considering the free-to-play announcement happened at TGS, it is unclear if the “near” February open beta for Deep Down will be worldwide or something initially exclusive to Japan.

Today’s reveal comes as a bit of a surprise, as Deep Down certainly seemed to be positioned as a more traditional “triple-A” PlayStation 4 exclusive. Without any further details on how Capcom plans to monetize the game, it is impossible to say if this will be good news or bad news for prospective players.

We will keep our eyes open for any additional information and let you know as soon as anything is announced.
