Final Fantasy VII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura has provided a brief progress update on the status of the project in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu. As translated by Gematsu, Nomura is directly quizzed on the current state of the remake’s development cycle, wherein he replied with, “we’re steadily progressing on production. I apologize that the wait will be a bit longer for Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake. I am very sorry, but to that degree I will make a game that will meet your expectations.”
While not directly stating as such, it appears as if both titles mentioned by Nomura have suffered some form of delay in development, which would explain the lack of new details ever since the remake’s announcement during Sony’s E3 conference in 2015.
“Last year, I didn’t put out much information on either title,” continues Nomura, adding that “but this year I want to show our progress at an event somewhere. The release of the titles themselves still have a way to go.”
As for Kingdom Hearts III – another hugely anticipated Square Enix title – Nomura admits that he’s unable to “make a sweeping statement” on the RPG’s progress because the “development process is different from what we’ve done so far.” Rest assured, though, that production is steadily progressing on both projects, they may just be arriving later than initially planned.
With Nomura hoping to showcase the Final Fantasy VIII Remake in greater detail at some point throughout 2017, you can probably expect to get your next glimpse of Cloud’s triumphant return at this year’s E3 or the Tokyo Game Show in September.
