As Sony Online Entertainment’s free-to-play MMO inches ever close to its two-year anniversary on PC, the company has revealed more details on the PS4 port of PlanetSide 2, confirming that a beta will make its way to the console before the year’s end.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Matt Higby — creative director of the game — touched upon the status of the transition from platform to platform, stating that SOE is striving to rework the game for the console audience as opposed to releasing a half-baked port.
“As much as it sounds like we’re blowing smoke, we’re working hard to release a game that feels like a full-on console experience and not just like a port. So it’s taken us quite a long time to re-jigger our user interface and our controls. There’s a lot that needs to get done. But our goal is at the end of the day to have our launch on the PS4 feel like a great PS4 native console game. Not just a PC port. So it’s taking a while.”
Specifically, SOE has focused on remapping PlanetSide 2‘s user interface, bearing in mind that users will be navigating through the menus and character customization options using a DualShock 4 in lieu of the mouse and keyboard, a decision that will ultimately create an experience that is native to Sony’s current-gen console. As for visuals, Higby reassured fans of the shooter that the studio is targeting 1080p and 60 frames per second on PS4.
It’s worth nothing, however, that there will be no cross-platform play between the two versions of the MMO.
More information is expected to be shared regarding the PlayStation 4 version of PlanetSide 2 during Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Experience event, which is due to take place in Las Vegas on December 6th.
