This weekend, Anaheim plays host to the ever-popular Star Wars Celebration, and with the event set to get underway today, news pertaining to a galaxy far, far away is already coming out thick and fast. And though the vast majority of attention will be drawn towards the cinematic side of the beloved IP, DICE and EA are preparing to showcase the first gameplay footage for Star Wars Battlefront, the upcoming third-person shooter from the creative minds behind the Battlefield franchise.
Not much is known about Battlefront at this early stage, aside from the fact that the new installment will feature environments inspired from the film franchise, including Hoth and Endor. As you can see from the footage above (which was originally released last year), DICE is building the shooter using the Frostbite game engine, giving the studio the ability to render space-set locales with impressive precision.
As eye-catching as these visuals are, it’ll be the gameplay that will ultimately win over the hearts and minds of fans. In a interview from earlier this year, the studios’s Design Director Niklas Fegraeus spoke about the development team’s method of approach when it came to moulding the online arenas.
“The scale of our maps and modes offer a great variety depending on the location,” Star Wars Battlefront Design Director Niklas Fegraeus previously said. “Hoth, where the Rebel Alliance fought off invading AT-ATs in snowy plains, will differ in size than the dense woodland of Endor….We have actually made the decision to specifically tailor certain maps to certain game modes and what we get from that is not only incredibly varied scales, but also gameplay that will allow players to live out some of their most memorable Star Wars battle fantasies.”
Star Wars Battlefront is still without a release date at the time of writing, but stay tuned to We Got This Covered over the coming days as we’re sure to learn much more – and indeed see much more – with the annual Star Wars Celebration event taking place in Anaheim this weekend.
