Do you love Gollum in the Lord of the Rings? Were you thinking, “this Hobbit stuff was fine, but what about that slimy little ring loving dude, let’s get more of him.” Well, your prayers have been answered, because there’s a new video game on the way that does just that.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a game that traces the popular character’s adventures in search of his “precious.” Nacon just released a story trailer from the game, giving us some insight on what we can expect when it’s released. Here’s the synopsis:
“Discorver Daedalic’s untold story through a trailer featuring Gollum’s extraordinary adventure in search of his Precious. This original story will take you to several places across [and] through Middle-earth where you’ll meet well-known characters from the books of J.R.R. Tolkien.”
The trailer shows Gollum, in his trademark loincloth and nothing else, working between the forces of good and evil. There’s a young Gandalf as well as someone who represents Sauron, looking delightfully evil. In order for the game to work with Gollum as its protagonist, he needs to be a sympathetic character, something he isn’t in the source material.
That probably means some variations from the books, but that shouldn’t be a problem if it’s done well. We get to see snippets of gameplay – Gollum traversing on all fours, stealthily taking down enemies much larger him, and teaming up with a beautiful elf, or at least what looks like one.
The game was originally announced in in 2019 and expected in the Summer of last year, but it was pushed back until July at the soonest. There’s no firm release date yet, but Nacon said it “will be available in 2023 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.”
We’ll keep you posted on any developments.
