With Red Dead Redemption 2 now out, fans are hungry for news on Rockstar Games’ next major project: Grand Theft Auto 6. The developer is notoriously secretive about what they’re up to, but given that the title appeared on a former employee’s CV, we know that it’s in active development and now, an anonymous leaker has posted details that they claim reveal the location and plot outline.
The leak was shared on Pastebin and claims that the game will feature multiple big cities, with the player being able to travel between Liberty City and Vice City (something mentioned in a previous leak). There will also be vast stretches of highways, countryside and small towns situated between them. Furthermore, the game world is said to be so complex and gargantuan that memory restrictions mean it cannot appear on PS4, making it a PS5 and next-gen Xbox title.
As for the plot, the leaker says that players will find themselves in the shoes of a “small time guy in Liberty City” who works their way up the crime ladder until they join a famous gang in Vice City. Eventually, you’ll become “the drug lord” and there’ll apparently be Red Dead style stranger events, missions with flashbacks to different eras and an online world powered by cloud processing.
So, should you put any stock into all this? My betting is that it’s someone’s wishful thinking rather than anything rooted in fact. For one, GTA did Liberty City two games ago and rehashing the same locations for a third time would be rather unoriginal. Plus, the story they claim sounds like the most basic and boring GTA plot possible, and even Rockstar’s critics recognize that they try to push the envelope when it comes to video game storytelling.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t doubt that Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature an enormous map with multiple cities, but I’d personally take this leak with an ocean of salt.
