Sony’s Horizon Zero Dawn has managed to edge out Nintendo’s long-awaited The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to take pole position in the UK video games chart. As compiled by GfK Chart-Track, Guerilla Games’ brand new IP, which near-perfectly melds two popular genres together, has proven to be yet another hugely successful PlayStation 4 exclusive which, according to MCV, is the biggest ever new IP launch for Sony and the biggest of 2017 so far. With the apparent success of Team Ninja’s Nioh and the upcoming NieR: Automata, the PS4’s strong line-up this year is going to be a tough one to beat.
As for Breath of the Wild, Link’s return to consoles last week received universal critical acclaim for its reinvention of series’ tried and tested formula, offering fans the most expansive rendition of Hyrule yet. It may not have managed to trump Horizon Zero Dawn in terms of sales, but do note that the latter had a few extra days to push copies in relation to Nintendo’s labor of love, so the result could have been different if they both launched on the same day.
Either way, it’s clear that both titles have captured the imaginations of the public, and it’ll be interesting to see how much things are shaken up next week. In regards to the rest of the chart, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V remains largely unaffected by new releases, sticking to no.3. Other Switch launch title, 1-2 Switch, takes no.4, with Ubisoft’s medieval brawler, For Honor, slipping to no.5.
