It seems that DOOM developer id Software will succeed in doing something that so many other developers can’t quite manage; the first-person shooter will run at a smooth 1080p/60fps on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, according to a post on the Bethesda Blog.

Lead project programmer for DOOM Billy Khan said in the post that his team “want players to wonder how DOOM and idTech 6 games can be so visually stunning at 60 frames-per-second at 1080p on all platforms, when other titles cannot even achieve a similar look at 30 frames-per-second. Our goal is to be the best-looking game at 1080p at 60fps.”

Those are big words indeed, and if Khan’s words turn out to be totally justified when DOOM releases on May 13, the reboot will undoubtedly be an exception to the rule where cross-platform optimization is concerned.

Disparity between different versions of the same game has become quite frequent this generation, most notably between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the former having suffered from an inferior native resolution to the latter on several occasions where multi-platform titles are concerned.

DOOM hits Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on May 13, a date which – we’re sure – will also mark the arrival of hundreds of comparison videos aiming to see if Khan’s claims are on the money. Those that pre-order digitally on Xbox One will have the added bonus of receiving backwards compatible versions of Doom and Doom 2 for free.
