It’s official: Infinity Ward will take point for the as-yet-untitled Call of Duty 2016.

Activision Blizzard made the news official during a fourth-quarter financial report earlier today – which also heralded confirmation of Destiny 2 – with Infinity Ward expressing its own excitement to showcase the latest entry in the juggernaut series.

With only a confirmation that Infinity Ward is taking the reins, the jury’s still out on what Call of Duty 2016 will be. Common logic would dictate that the developer is crafting a sequel to 2013’s Ghosts, though it’d be foolish to rule out a sequel or potential reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-series.

In keeping with Activision’s new three-tier development cycle, 2016 will mark the studio’s first foray at the helm since Ghosts launched to lowly reviews. During that period, Sledgehammer Games broke off into the near-future with Advanced Warfare, before Treyarch catapulted the franchise all the way into 2065 with the release of last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III.

So, where does the series go from here? Time will tell, of course, and if Activision hues close to tradition, expect Call of Duty 2016 to be unveiled in earnest around late April or early May.
