Following the leak yesterday of a promotional poster for superhero fighter Injustice 2, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have officially announced the sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us with a flashy cinematic trailer.
Continuing directly from the events of the first game, developer NetherRealm says that Injustice 2 will improve upon the original not just visually, but mechanically, too. A new Gear System will be one of the core features of the beat ’em up, and will allow players to customize their heroes and villains with different gear by way of loot drops awarded at the end of every match.
The Gear System uses RPG-like mechanics to reward you with loot drops every time you play the game. With each loot drop, you will earn character-specific gear to outfit and power up your roster – changing not only the look of each character, but your fight strategy and your personal approach to every match. As you gear up your characters, you’re building a roster of DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains that reflects your choices, and your preferences, which can be vastly different than your opponents.
NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon added (via VideoGamer) that the studio is always looking for ways to “change the way fans play fighting games,” and that they’re “always interested in pushing the genre forward.”
In Injustice 2, we are introducing new features that will change the way fans play fighting games. We’re always interested in pushing the genre forward and allowing players to customise and level-up their favourite DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains is a significant leap.
To get a taste of what to expect when Injustice 2 launches next year, you can watch the likes of Superman, The Flash, Batman and Supergirl go head-to-head in the trailer above. As of now, it’s unclear if the game will be releasing for PC alongside consoles, if at all, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
