While we’ve gotten a Vita entry and a kart racer spinoff for Sony’s LittleBigPlanet series, it’s been over three years since the 2D platformer franchise has had a true new entry. That’s finally going to come to an end this November, though, as Sony just confirmed LittleBigPlanet 3 during their E3 press conference.
A live playthrough of one level showcased what will presumably be the sequel’s biggest new feature, that being three new playable characters joining the iconic Sackboy for his latest adventure. The four-legged OddSock will be able to perform wall jumps, the size-changing Toggle will be able to switch between big and burly or small and nimble with a button press, and Swoop the bird will be able to fly and carry other characters.
Even better is the fact that, despite being on completely different hardware, all 8 million user-created levels from the original pair of PS3 LittleBigPlanet games will be able to be downloaded and played again within LittleBigPlanet 3, complete with enhanced graphics. The game’s developers also look to be expanding on the series’ trademark plane-switching mechanic, as while the game will remain a 2D side-scroller at its heart, it does look like there will be much more switching between layers, and likely more than the default limit of three previous games had.
There also seems to be a definite possibility that downloadable content from the previous games, or at least the numerous costumes available for Sackboy, will be able to be transferred into this latest entry – at least if the brief glimpse of the already released Infamous: Second Son costume in the announcement trailer is any indication.
We will keep you updated on LittleBigPlanet 3 as more details are announced. Until then, check out the hot new announcement trailer below.
