“Mankind’s greatest mistake will be its inability to control the technology it has created.” From the offset, Activision and developer Treyarch make it immediately clear that Call of Duty: Black Ops III takes place in a dark and twisted future, where themes of transhumanism are woven into the game’s core storyline. It’s a frightening, all-too-realistic premise, and one that is driven further home in this latest live-action teaser for the studio’s threeequel, ahead of the world reveal on Sunday, April 26.
Taking the exoskeletons and mechanized soldiers from last year’s Advanced Warfare one step further, Black Ops III will explore a radically different battlefield circa 2065, where governments have essentially engineered their soldiers on the front lines to become cold-blooded killing machines. Whether it’s retinal implants, DNA upgrades or cybernetic limbs, many of the tropes revealed thus far wouldn’t look out of place in a Deus Ex game, and it’ll be interesting to see how Treyarch mould the far-flung tech around Call of Duty‘s blisteringly fast gameplay.
While it’s unlikely that we’ll see gameplay on April 26 – a reveal that is often saved to open Microsoft’s press conference at E3 – we’ll certainly learn much more about the plot of Black Ops III. One question remains, though: how can they possibly top the casting of Kevin Spacey from Sledgehammer’s release last year?
