Speaking to Gamer Syndrome, BioWare Montreal producer Mike Gamble confirmed that work has started on the follow up to Mass Effect 3 — which has not been confirmed to be Mass Effect 4 — however, the game’s release date is at least two years away.

“You’ll hear more about the new Mass Effect game in 2013… [it should launch] late 2014 to mid-2015… I honestly can’t tell you an exact [date] because full development on the game started a month or two ago.”

Gamble first hinted that there would be a fourth Mass Effect title last February, and the game was confirmed to be using EA’s Frostbite engine in a post on BioWare’s blog last month. In that same post Yanick Roy, BioWare Montreal’s studio director, provided the only official information that has been released about the game so far:

“There is really not much I can tell you about the game right now, except that it will be built with the amazing technology of Frostbite as its foundation, enhanced by many of the systems that the Dragon Age III team has already spent a lot of time building.”

“The other thing I can tell you is that, while it will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts. You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling.”

With Mass Effect 4‘s tentative release window about two years away it will most likely be late 2013 before any substantial details about the game are released. We will keep a look out for any talk about the upcoming project, and let you know as soon as EA or BioWare announce anything official.
