Mass Effect: Andromeda Unveils Stellar First Gameplay

At The Game Awards this evening, BioWare unveiled the stellar first gameplay footage from Mass Effect: Andromeda. It's on course for a 2017 release.

It’s been billed as the studio’s biggest endeavour yet, and to give us a taste of what to expect, BioWare has debuted the first official gameplay trailer for Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Taking point as the Pathfinder, your mission is to locate a new home for humanity. Equipped with an entire arsenal of bleeding-edge tools and equipment, the snippet above is but a teaser of what to expect from the full experience.

As promised, the reveal came during The Game Awards 2016, where BioWare’s sequel was competing for the Most Anticipated Game accolade going into 2017. Other titles that were jockeying for that very award included Red Dead Redemption 2, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn and Sony Santa Monica’s sequel/reboot, God of War. Alas, Breath of the Wild was ultimately crowned the winner in that category.

Circling back to Andromeda, though, we know that BioWare’s 2017 sequel takes place long after the original trilogy, where players will be taking control of a new space vessel known as the Tempest. Such a departure from the core Mass Effect series will allow the studio to tell a self-contained story circa 2785, a full 600 years after the events that transpired in ME3. That means due to the nature of space travel between galaxies, the core characters of BioWare’s sequel will be blissfully unaware of Commander Shepard and the Reaper war by the time Andromeda begins.

Speaking of the sequel’s vast scope, Producer Mike Gamble revealed recently that, Mass Effect: Andromeda “is the biggest we’ve ever gone, in terms of the number of pieces of content. There are combat-related encounters, puzzle-related encounters, narrative-related encounters, and a lot of things will happen that add more depth to the critical path.”

Mass Effect: Andromeda is in development for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Stay tuned to We Got This Covered for more coverage coming out of The Game Awards 2016.
