Next week, Metal Gear Solid players will be able to indulge themselves with a brand new Survival mode for the game’s online companion. Take this exciting news with a pinch of salt, however, as there are a few caveats to how well you may – or may not – be able to enjoy this new mode.
For starters, Metal Gear Solid‘s Survival mode may not be quite what you’re expecting from the title. While being dubbed ‘Survival,’ it’s actually a ‘Survival Match’ mode – don’t go into this thinking it’s going to be like Big Boss meets The Hunger Games. You’ll actually be tasked with surviving a string of six person matches and attempting to gain a win-streak of 5 or more matches to emerge victorious.
Perhaps more unusual, however, is the limits that the Survival mode will have for non-owners of Metal Gear Solid‘s DLC. Players who have not purchased the Cloaked in Silence add-on will be limited to ten Survival attempts per week, whereas those who have forked out for the extra content will have unlimited access. While the DLC is admittedly only $3.99, this is still a bit of a strong-armed tactic from Konami.
Nevertheless, Survival matches will be coming as part of the April 7th update for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and its counterpart Metal Gear Online. In the meantime, you can check out the trailer above, but be prepared for a bizarrely empty experience if you do.
We warned you…
