Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is everything fans wanted in a sequel and more, but like much of the industry these days, the game apparently suffers from a number of technical issues. Now, after learning that Respawn Entertainment has managed to release this title in so short a time since production began three years ago, we’re inclined to believe Survivor is almost a game design miracle.
With the eighth and ninth generations of gaming hardware taking leaps and bounds in terms of raw power, game design has turned into a nightmarish hassle. At the rate we’re currently facing, it takes a major and experienced game developer at least five or six years to produce a AAA title, so imagine our surprise when we learned Respawn managed to start development and go Gold in a span of three years.
Per Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor entered production three years ago, and now, in what takes most developers twice as long to finish, they have delivered the next chapter in Cal Kestis’ journey. What makes this even more mind-boggling is the fact that the majority of that time took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period when most industries — and the entertainment world, in particular — hit something of a hiatus.
Survivor‘s director Stig Asmussen thinks it’s all par for the course, and “if anything, it’s a testament to the team.” He also says it was actually three years and a half, probably to make his peers in other studios feel better about their hard work.
Of course, Jedi: Survivor is also experiencing a very troubled launch, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s nothing we haven’t seen before, especially in recent times.
