It was only a month ago that the internet was set ablaze with worry that the Master of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto, was retiring. He wasn’t. Instead he’s getting more hands on than he has been, (and I wrote about why that’s an incredibly good thing). Looks like we can expect a brand new game sooner than we expected.
In an interview with Zoomin Games, Miyamoto mentions that he’s working on something new and original, in addition to his work on Luigi’s Mansion 2 for 3DS and Pikmin 3 for Wii U.
“People have come to expect a lot from me. This certainly makes me feel some pressure. But if you ask me, ‘Is it too much pressure to try to come out with something new?’ I have to say no, I’m enjoying myself. When I make something I always try to do my best.”
He didn’t offer any other details, but the mere fact of working on something new is enough to get Nintendo fans worldwide to pay attention.
He also addressed the large amount of confusion surrounding his “retirement.”
“I really appreciate all the kindness given the kind of comments that I made. But to be clear, I have no intention to retire at all. I’m not old enough to think about retirement right now.”
That seems odd to me. Miyamoto is 60. To me, that seems like prime age to be thinking about retirement.
Highlights of the interview can be seen in the video below.
What say you, gamers? What do you think Miyamoto is working on?
