Last week, Ed Boon officially announced Mortal Kombat X, the latest entry in the long running fighting franchise. Paired with that announcement was a video depicting long time series combatants Scorpion and Sub Zero fighting against each other and the promise of more information soon. Sony’s E3 press conference last night brought about that information, as not only did we get the first gameplay footage from the title, but we also got a glimpse of some new faces that will be coming out to play.
As you would probably imagine, the gameplay shown off from Mortal Kombat X was very reminiscent of the combat seen in the well received 2011 reboot of the franchise. The X-ray footage of bones being shattered makes a triumph return, as do, of course, the over the top gory fatalities that popularized the series. The one new idea showcased in the trailer is that players will be able to interact with backgrounds in greater fashion. Similar to fellow NetherRealm Studios fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us, the competing combatants threw each other into assorted environmental hazards in order to deal further damage.
The bigger takeaway from this trailer, at least for me anyway, was the debut of two brand new characters for Mortal Kombat X. Although the franchise has not always had the best luck with debuting new characters, the combatants showed off here were pretty unique, if nothing else.
The first new character revealed was D’Vorah, a half-human, half-insect woman. Blessed with lightning speed and the ability to fly, D’Vorah will also be able to call upon other insects for help. The other new combatant announced is actually technically two different beings in one. Torr is a massive brute of a man who has a small lady riding on top of him named Ferra. As silly as it sounds, the two actually work well with each other and Torr can even use his smaller companion as a projectile.
Mortal Kombat X is currently scheduled for a 2015 release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC. Check out the new footage below and let us know if you’re excited to get your hands on the game.
