Activision’s decision to release DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops III almost two years after its debut still feels a little odd to me. Given the quick turnaround of each entry in the series, an emphasis is usually placed on whatever’s coming next rather than revisiting the past, making Zombies Chronicles an anomaly as far as Call of Duty DLC is concerned.
It’s for that very reason that you might think this is a quick cash grab before the way is made clear for Call of Duty: WWII and its inevitably successful launch later this year, but that certainly doesn’t appear to be the case. In fact, judging by today’s gameplay trailer, Treyarch has given Zombies Chronicles all the attention it deserves in order to justify the add-on’s $30 price tag.
As announced previously, the meaty package contains eight remastered Zombies maps from past entries, including World at War‘s Nacht der Untoten, Verruckt and Shi No Numa as well as the original Black Ops‘ Kino Der Toten, Ascension, Shangri-La and Moon. The final map, Origins, hails from Black Ops II.
Zombies Chronicles is out May 16 for PlayStation 4 as a digital-only download. Xbox One and PC players will have to wait until Sony’s timed exclusivity deal with Activision ends (usually around 30 days) to get their hands on the remastered content, but they’re not being left out entirely next week. A celebratory double experience event will run from release day for around a week on all platforms, with other bonuses including a new callsign and weapon skin.
