A sequel to last year’s smash indie hit Nidhogg is currently in development for PC and Mac, developer Messhof Games has announced. Unsurprisingly named Nidhogg 2, creator Mark ‘Messhof’ Essen released a short teaser for the title at TwitchCon 2016 yesterday, showcasing an expanded range of weapons and a drastically different – and very bizarre – visual style.
You can see for yourselves how far Messhof has diverged from the minimalist, pixel art aesthetic of the original in the trailer above, but brace yourselves for a surprise if you had grown attached to the former. Adopting more of a 16-bit art style, Nidhogg 2 looks set to build on the base mechanics of the original in every foreseeable way. In addition to the basic fencing swords players wielded in the first game, bows, axes and daggers will be available too, hopefully making each and every duel far more unpredictable than before.
As per Polygon, Nidhogg 2 will offer more than 10 levels upon release, as well as a dedicated single-player mode that pits players against AI-controlled opponents. “Special challenge rounds” will also appear, although it’s not currently clear how these will differ from standard duel rounds.
Although PC and Mac are the only currently confirmed platforms for Nidhogg 2, Messhof says that “maybe some other platforms” will see a release in the future.
