Nintendo announced an expansion to its action strategy game Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity today, available in two waves. The first wave, called Pulse of the Ancients is already available, while the second, called Guardian of Remembrance, comes out in late October.
The prequel to the 2017 smash hit Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity takes on a drastically different approach to its gameplay. Instead of a sprawling action RPG adventure, Hyrule Warriors is more hack and slash and inhabits the musou style of Koei Tecmo Warrior games, such as Dynasty Warriors 9.
Due to this drastic switch up, the game isn’t for everyone. However, for those who like that style of samurai-style epic battles, it can be a suitable hold over until the release of Breath of the Wild 2, which is a title Nintendo teased to earlier this year.
In addition, what sets the game apart from most Zelda games is the ability to play as a myriad of different characters with different fighting styles.
Besides just being a prequel from Breath of the Wild in terms of story, taking place 100 years before the events of that game take place, Age of Calamity is actually the second in the Hyrule Warriors franchise. The first Hyrule Warriors came to the Wii U back in 2014 as one of the best selling games for that console. It was later given an updated port to the Nintendo 3Ds as Hyrule Warriors Legends. A third enhanced port eventually made its way to the Switch with Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition.
The first part of the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity expansion pass is out now and you get the second one on October 29, 2021.
