Nintendo certainly hasn’t broken the mold by announcing a collection of DLC for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild before the highly-anticipated title is even out, but that hasn’t stopped some from taking issue with the timing of the reveal. The Big N having never made additional content for a Zelda title before could perhaps explain the increased scrutiny its so-called expansion pass has been placed under, but whatever the case, Nintendo’s Bill Trinen is on-hand to provide a little context for the reveal.
Speaking to IGN (via VG247) Trinen admitted that “it [the expansion pass announcement] was tough, because we actually had a lot of debate in terms of do we announce it, how do we announce it,” adding that, despite the fact that Link’s Switch and Wii U debut is looking to be his biggest adventure yet, Nintendo didn’t want to “waste” its potential by just releasing one game and then moving on to other projects.
Of course, if you missed the DLC’s original unveiling last week, none of the above is likely to mean much to you. Two separate add-ons are included in the pass, with the first scheduled for a summer release and the latter towards the end of the year.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is out for Nintendo Switch and Wii U on March 3 and, if recent comments made by series producer Eiji Aonuma are anything to go by, we could well be seeing a 2D Zelda title for the former console come out in the future. Read more about that here.
